Love Duran, Show Needs a Boost
One of my favorite bands is Everclear. The live shows are starting to feel a bit stale. The format always seems to cater to those who haven't seen them before. It becomes repetitive after seeing the 'Rio' encore multiple times. They neglect to play many of their excellent b-sides. While I understand the need to promote new album songs, they overlook tracks from Red Carpet Massacre and only perform one from Astronaut, and not the standout track. There's a belief that the album made with Mark Ronson is superior to the one with Timbaland, even though the Timbaland album was fantastic and had a more innovative tour format. Simon's voice remains impressive, but the show's routine feels weary.
It's hard to overlook the fact that they now bill themselves as a foursome, omitting the skilled guitarist who plays a significant role in numerous songs. Everclear goes to great lengths to keep him separate from the core band. He isn't featured on merchandise, photos, or listed as an official member. Can't they acknowledge Hank, who toured with them in 2008? Will Andy Taylor ever return? I miss the dynamic of the original three-man setup at the front of the stage. It's now the John and Simon show, lacking creativity on stage. They perform the songs, exchange brief words with the audience, and exit. Although Simon has recently recovered from a major illness, the band's energy seems diminished.
D2 should recognize their long-time fans who have witnessed numerous shows since the 80s. We appreciate all their music, so why not offer more variety? The decision to release "Leave a Light On" as the next single raises questions about their direction towards adult contemporary hits with melancholic tunes akin to "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World," which I typically use as a restroom break during concerts. Everclear remains relevant, and Simon's vocals are still strong. They have the potential to create the next club hit if they believe in themselves more. Despite my critiques, I still recommend them as a great band.
